Basetsana secured a 2-2 draw against Burundi in the second leg of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, but exit the tournament after falling foul of the away goal rule at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, on Wednesday, 11 October, 2023.
The outcome of the match means that Burundi has earned a ticket to the next round of the competition, while the South African U20 Women’s National Team exit the 2024 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
They maintain the unfortunate distinction of being the sole national team that has yet to secure a World Cup qualification.
In the first leg, the two teams battled to a goalless draw, with Burundi hosting the match at the same venue.
In the second ‘return’ leg, South Africa once again displayed dominance, and mounted comebacks twice only for the match to end in a 2-all draw.
Burundi’s Akimamna struck first in the 12th minute, but South Africa’s Adrille Mibe quickly equalised in the 32nd minute, boosting the home team’s hopes. Regrettably, she was substituted shortly after her goal due to injury.
Burundi once again surged ahead in the 67th minute, crafting a well-orchestrated goal thanks to Nshimirimana’s skilled play. However, South Africa was not to be outdone, as Lindelwa Mabuza showcased her talent with a magnificent goal in the 72nd minute, reinvigorating their chances.
