Since its launch in 2006, gsport has been at the forefront of celebrating and amplifying women in sport in South Africa. What began with the first gsport Award presented to Penny Heyns on 1 August 2006 has grown into a platform that has honoured hundreds of athletes, organisations, and brands, preserving their legacy and inspiring generations.

In 2019, after 13 years of championing women’s sport locally, gsport Founder Kass Naidoo took the mission global, marking the birth of #gsportGlobal.

The journey began in Surat, India, during the Proteas Women’s tour, a bold first step that expanded gsport’s reach and impact beyond South African borders.

Since then, #gsportGlobal has grown organically:

– Launching the Global Woman in Sport Award and the #gsportAfrica chapter, bridging African achievements with global recognition.

– Expanding coverage in the gsport Newsroom, tracking South Africans breaking barriers worldwide.

– Appointing gsport’s first global correspondents, including coverage of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

– Hosting the first #gsportGlobal gathering during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023.

– Extending outreach internationally, mentoring young girls in Barbados through cricket programs in 2025.

– Earning recognition from the G100 Club, further cementing gsport’s global impact.

Reflecting on six years of #gsportGlobal, Kass says: “As we approach 20 years of gsport, this milestone reminds us how far we’ve come, and how much more we can achieve through collaboration, storytelling, and visibility for women in sport.”

From its South African roots in 2006 to its global reach today, gsport continues to preserve sporting heritage, celebrate trailblazers, and inspire generations of women athletes around the world.
