During the month of February, women’s sport was a hive of activity, leading up to an outstanding third monthly intake of newsmakers ahead of our fifth edition of the gsport Annual List event powered by Momentum, in partnership with Telkom, in December 2023.
Over the past few weeks, all eyes were on South Africa as the country hosted the world for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
As crowds filled seats at the stadiums in Cape Town, Paarl and Gqeberha, the Momentum Proteas added the cherry on top of the cake, becoming the first South African cricket side – male or female – to feature in a final at an ICC event, eventually securing silver medal honours.
To add to this historic feat, opening batswoman Laura Wolvaardt completed the tournament as leading run-scorer. The 23-year-old also featured in the Most Valuable ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Team of the Tournament, alongside team-mates, Tazmin Brits and Shabnim Ismail.
In other headlining news, para-athlete Simoné Kruger recorded two African records at the Winelands International Para Athletes Competition. The 18-year-old is now number 1 on the World Rankings after she recorded a best throw of 34,39m in the discus and a well-deserved distance of 12,14m in shot put.

The gsport Annual List (#GAL) was launched in 2019 to show how far women’s sport has come. It is South Africa’s only Newsmakers event that is dedicated to women’s sport.
