TP Mazembe are the champions of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League after claiming a 1-nil victory over hosts AS FAR in a thrilling encounter at the Ben M’Hamed El Abdi Stadium in El Jadida, Morocco, on Saturday, 23 November, 2024.

The Moroccan side conceded a penalty in the 10th minute, after their captain Aziza Rabbah was penalised for handball, that opened way for Democratic Republic of Congo champion’s Marlène Kasaj to net the only goal of the final in a result that stunned the tournament hosts.

The result was an unexpected one, as AS FAR, who had previously won 3-1 against Mazembe in their Group A tie on 12 November, and also won the African title in 2022 and entered the 2024 spectacle as favourites, alongside defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo outfit, Lamia Boumehdi, was thrown into the air by her players amid the celebrations, as the Lubumbashi outfit became the third club to emerge as champions of the CAF African Women’s Champions League finals.

Merveille Kanjinga’s exceptional play in the match earned her the Woman of the Match award.

With this victory The Ravens secure the highly coveted CAF Women’s Champions League trophy hauling in $600,000 (over R10.4million), a cheque they’ll gladly use to wipe away tears of their 2022 group stage exit. Morocco’s runners up will pocket $400,000 (approximately R7m).

Meanwhile, Egyptian side, FC Masar finished third after dispatching fellow debutants, Edo Queens 4-3 on penalties after the tie ended goalless.

The podium finish is a sign of the great work being done by the academy side in Egypt who make history at the inter-club tournament.

FC Masar coach, Admed Radadhan was proud of the brave showing by his charges who showed character against some of the best clubs in Africa on their maiden appearance.

“This is a historic victory for us. We worked hard to get here, and this result shows that we are ready to compete with the best teams in Africa. The team has shown great potential and courage against the best clubs in Africa”, said the coach.

The Queens of Nigeria secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in their lead up to the semi-finals, to eliminate them from the competition in dramatic fashion.

The other South African representative, University of Western Cape also bowed out in the group stages, on their debut in this tournament.
