The University of Western Cape were handed a 2-0 drubbing by TP Mazembe in their debut game of the CAF Women’s Champions League, an opening Group A encounter at the Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi in El Jadida, Morocco, on Saturday, 9 November, 2024.
Lacho Marta opened the DR Congolese side’s account in the 61st minute with a spectacular finish, and Merveille Kanjinga Nanguji doubled the lead in the 78th to all but seal the first three points for the Congolese outfit.
Macha secured the player of the match accolade following an impactful game that puts her side in a favourable position at the start of the competition.
“We knew their strength is playing long balls behind our defence and we knew their number 10 is their key player. We couldn’t play according to our strength – the passing game, silly mistakes cost us the game, and we allowed them to dictate and play their normal game, but we not giving up.”

“We still have another game and it’s pressure on us,” said coach Mbuli, “Because we must get the results on the next game.”
The Western Province side is back in action on Tuesday and they face Senegalese side Angles de la Médina at 16:00.
Médina lost 3-0 to hosts AS FAR in the opening game of the African women’s club showpiece.
52% Increase in Prize Money
In the build-up to the tournament CAF announced a massive 52% increase in the total prize money for the fourth edition of the CAF WCL, with the winner of the continental club competition to walk away with $600,000 (over R10.4million), and runners up will earn $400,000 (close to R7 million).
This indicates the dedication to the growth of women’s football on the African continent as confirmed by CAF in a statement on their website.
“CAF is committed to developing and growing Women’s Football in Africa and the objective of President Motsepe is to invest in Youth Academies for boys and girls and to continue increasing prize monies of all CAF Competitions to make them globally competitive and attractive.”
Bronze medallists will pocket $350,000 (a little over R6m), while fourth place will be handed a $300,000 USD cheque (above R5m).
Teams that manage a third place finish in the two groups will return home with $200,000 (about R3.5m) Not all is lost for teams that finish last in their pool, as they will also receive a boost of close to R2.6 million.
