Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have retained their Hollywoodbets Super Letsatsi title after cruising past TUT Matsantsantsa FC Ladies 5-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville in their Tshwane derby on Saturday, 2 November, 2024.

Andisiwe Mgcoyi and Rhoda Mulaudzi both scored a brace, plus one late goal from Leona Daweti was enough to see off their cross-town rivals with a game to spare in this 2024/25 campaign.

Coach Jerry Tshabalala has now led his team to five consecutive Super League titles, underscoring the dominance of Banyana Ba Style. Tsahabalala, winner of the Coach of the Year award at the 2024 gsport Awards, is happy to bag another piece of silverware, and looks ahead to defending their CAF Champions League title in a few weeks.

“You know, I’m excited, over the moon, we finally wrapped up the league, you know, I think we’ve wrapped it up in a good way, with good performance from the team!”

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Head Coach, Jerry Tshabalala

“As much as we had a few challenges in terms of preparing the team this week, with a number of our players into different national teams, so it really shows the depth of the squad,” said Coach Tsahabalala. “You know, it’s really important for us to have this kind of a depth, and now, the bigger one – it’s the CAF Champions League, [and] we want to go out there and bring it back home as well.”

In the 29 games played, Sundowns have won 26, drew two and lost one. While the stats indicate the pure class that is this club, most of the Hollywoodbets Super League teams are showing significant improvement, and gave the champions elect a run for their money in most games.

University of Western Cape, University of Johannesburg, TS Galaxy Queens and JVW FC are just some among of the teams that did not make it easy for the Tshwane outfit.

Daweti, who just rejoined the squad from the European Tour with Banyana Banyana, reflected on the triumph.

I’m actually happy that we won the league again, it wasn’t easy, we pushed throughoutthe whole season, the teams were coming very hard at us, but we didn’t let them walk overus, but yeah, very proud of the girls, very proud of the coaches and everyone.”

“We played very well this season, we gave it all our best. Credit must go to the girls, it was a very, very long season for us, a very, very tough season, a season where we were given a run for our money by UWC and the other teams.”

Tshabalala added: “Credit must also go to teams like UWC for challenging us this season, it really prepares us for a bigger one, which is the CAF Champions League, and we are excited about it, we fought a good fight with the girls, and we can only build going forward from here.”

Sundowns and CAFCL debutants UWC FC will now shift focus to the 2024 CAF club competition hosted by Morocco slated for 9-23 November.

Forward Daweti was happy to find the back of the net. “Well, haven’t been scoring for a while, feels good being back in the scoring sheets, confidence is high, this is a very positive thing for us to wrap up the league like this and go into CAF, it should be a positive thing, leaving the country with a win and winning the league, so it’s quite a good motivation for us as the girls, so we can go defend our CAF also.”

Sundowns will play league runners up UWC FC on 5 December in their final game of the season, where they will also officially lift the trophy.
