gsport LogoIt was a bumper weekend of international sport in SA, with the Investec SA women’s hockey team grabbing the headlines again as they won silver in the Investec Challenge, which also featured Australia, England and Netherlands.

The women in green and gold attracted a full house for the final against Netherlands at Hartleyvale stadium, as they played their hearts, losing 4-2 and ending credible runners-up.

Western Province women’s rugby coach Aslam Abrahams tweeted: “My first ever hockey international game live. It was a great game. The SA girls made South Africa proud. Fighting till the end.”

South Africa advanced to the final following a hard fought 2-1 win over Australia on Saturday night.

The Momentum Proteas had a tougher weekend at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2013 in India, suffering a crushing seven wicket loss at the hands of a much more experienced England outfit. The loss means the Proteas are out of the running for top four finish, and will now battle it out for 5th/6th position against Sri Lanka, on Wednesday.

Ashley Twichell became the first USA swimmer to win the Midmar Mile, outside Howick on Sunday, beating Brit Kerry Anne Payne (silver) and top SA swimmer Michelle Weber (bronze) to the top of the aQuellé Midmar Mile 2013 podium.

Sarah Baum kicked off her 2013 pro season in a confidence-boosting fifth place after reaching the ASP Star-rated Breaka Burleigh Pro Women’s quarter-finals, in Australia on Saturday.

And with half of the series already behind us, 2012 Olympian Tiffany Kruger secured a comfortable fourth straight Marine Surfski Series title ahead of Nikki Russell and Danica Bartho, at the Hansa Surfski Challenge in Durban on Friday evening, and looks the strong favourite to clasp her hands around the 2013 trophy when the competition ends on 15 March.
