Kruger Firms Grip on Marine Surfski Title

Olympian Tiffany Kruger raced to her fourth consecutive victory on Friday evening when she won the Hansa Surfski Challenge in Durban on Friday, 8 February, 2013, Race Five of the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series. “The conditions tonight, as they have for all of the races thus far, really suited me tonight with me having not been in a ski for four years,” said Kruger. “I sat behind Danica (Kruger) and Nicole (Russell) for the first lap, and then went out on my own in the second.”

“Having not been in a ski for a while, I think I’ve lost a bit of my run catching ability, but I was probably a bit stronger than the other girls going back into the wind, so that definitely worked in my favour tonight.”

Regular top performer Matt Bouman and Keren Worlock claimed the Hansa Surfski Challenge doubles title. Photo: Anthony Grote/ Gameplan Media“I don’t really like to win by default, as such, with Michelle (Burn) not being able to paddle because of her injury, but the ladies field has definitely grown recently, so its still some really good racing each week.”

“I’ve got four now, but there are still two to go so I definitely can’t say I’ve won it until I’ve got those two results. The race is only ever won at the finish, and we’re not there yet.”

With The Unlimited Dusi just days away, the likes of series defending champ Hank McGregor (Team Best 4 Kayak Centre) and fellow title contender Matt Bouman enjoyed the lighter side of the sport, when they opted to paddle with their partners Pippa Elliott and Keren Warlock respectively.

Matt Bouman and his girlfriend Keren Worlock went on to claim the overall doubles title ahead of Quinton Rutherford and Segal with Hank McGregor and his fiancé Pippa Elliott giving mixed doubles crews a clean sweep of the doubles category.

Race six of the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series, the second of the Hansa Surfski Challenges, sees things shift from the norm somewhat as The Unlimited Dusi canoe marathon hits town, and has seen organizer Barry Lewin move the event from its traditional Friday evening slot to Tuesday 12 February with all the action getting underway at the usual 17h30.
