South Africa’s Candice Lill grabbed a podium place for the second year in a row at the 2024 UCI MTB Marathon World Championships, finishing third for the bronze medal in the race in Snowshoe, West Virginia in the USA, on Sunday, 21 September 2024.
Lill has enjoyed some good form in the event, having secured a silver medal in the 2023 edition of the race that was held in Glasgow, Scotland.
Lill’s 2023 Cape Epic partner, Austria’s Mona Mitterwallner took the win in a time of 5 hours, 15 minutes, and 6 seconds, Switzerland’s Sina Frei was second over the finish line in 5:15:32, as Lill wrapped up the podium places with a time of 05:16:15.
This year’s race was set to be a gruelling one and the 100km course was one that the racers had to be at optimal fitness in mind and body if they wanted to get over the finish line. It was also the first time that the event was being held at the venue, presenting an additional challenge to all riders involved.
Lill showed raced with determination and grit to ensure her podium spot and give South African’s cycling fans a good reason to celebrate ahead of the Heritage Day.
The other South African competitor in the race was Nicola Freitas, who didn’t complete her ride, sharing a post on Instagram:
“Unfortunately, I was pulled off of the World’s course at the 63km mark. They had a cutoff there of 4 hours. There was no way I was going to realistically make it in time. Not with many routes requiring negotiation along the way.”
