January has been exciting for South African women in sport, which has led to an inspiring second newsmakers intake ahead of our fifth edition of the gsport Annual List event powered by Momentum, in partnership with Telkom, in December 2023.

The year began with the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Benoni and Potchefstroom, where rising stars displayed top performances.

South Africa’s Madison Landsman was one of the outstanding performers in the tournament, as she became the first to take a hat-trick of wickets in the competition.

Still on cricket, Momentum Proteas trio, Ayabonga Khaka, Laura Wolvaardt and Shabnim Ismail continue to proudly raise the country’s flag as they were included in the ICC ODI Team of the Year for their contributions to the sport.

Football also headlines this past month’s list, as Banyana Banyana international Linda Motlhalo signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Scottish giants, Glasgow City FC. While, her national team teammate, Kholosa Biyana made her return to South Africa, signing for UWC Football Club.

In another highlight, Kirsten Landman had a tough but rewarding start to the year, as the off-road endurance racer overcame numerous challenges to complete 14 stages at the 2023 Dakar Rally.

The gsport Annual List (#GAL) was launched in 2019 to show how far women’s sport has come. It is South Africa’s only Newsmakers event that is dedicated to women’s sport.
