Calculating bowling by India after putting the visitors in to bat for the third consecutive T20 International had the tour hosts comprehensively beating the Proteas Women to level the IDFC First Bank series one-all, at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, 9 July 2024.

With the second T20I rained out on Sunday, both teams wanted to show their supremacy but it was the Indian bowling unit that provided the excitement on the day. Once again Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to field first.

South African openers Laura Wolvaard and Tazmin Brits batted to a promising 19-run partnership before Arundhati Reddy took a brilliant catch off the bowling of Shreyanka Patil to dismiss Wolvaardt (9).

Marizanne Kapp and Brits added a further 11 runs before Pooja Vastrakar started her destructive bowling innings by claiming the wicket of Kapp (10) within the powerplay. Brits (20) fell 15 runs later, off the bowling of Deepti Sharma.

With South Africa on 45/3 in the 8th over, the middle order tried to stabilize the innings but the relentless and aggressive Indian bowling unit kept the runs at a minimum, and South African wickets fell at regular intervals.

Despite a valiant effort by Anneke Bosch (17), South Africa only managed to add a further 39 runs to the board before they were bowled out for a modest total of 84, in 17.1 overs.

Pooja Vastrakar proved the most destructive as she produced sensational bowling figures of 4/13, with Radha Yadav being the most economical bowler with figures of 3/6. Patil, Reddy and Sharma took a wicket each as India put on display their brilliance with the ball in restricting their opponents.

Chasing a modest target, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma approached their innings with aggressive discipline, and the ensuring batting prowess display shown by India’s opening pair ensured there were no early wickets as they ticked away at the scoreboard.

The Proteas bowling unit tried hard to replicate the Indian bowling heroics but Mandhana and Verma batted with ease and confidence as they reached their target in 10.5 overs. Smriti (54*) and Shafali (27*) remained unbeaten as India beat South Africa by 10 wickets to level the T20I series 1-all.
