The Confederation of University and College Sports Association (CUCSA) Region V Games officially got underway with the 2024 edition at the Tshwane University of Technology and University of Pretoria from 8-12 July, 2024.
Once the formalities of the opening ceremonies were done, an action-packed first day got underway. First up it was the South African women’s football team who got competition started. The home side took on Botswana and it was quite the match as the South Africans sealed a dominant 8-0 win over their Southern African counterparts.
At the same time, the South African netball side was also in action, and taking on the same opponent in Botswana. This team, much like their football counterparts, was in fine form, and was able to deal Botswana a heavy blow in their first match, as they walked away with a 75-10 win.

South Africa then followed that result up with another solid win, this time they got an 86-16 victory over Zimbabwe to get the competition off to a perfect start on day one.
The South African Women’s basketball team capped off a great day for the hosts as they were also winners. However, in very different circumstances, the basketball team – unlike their compatriots – was handed a victory, as the Malawians forfeited the match.

Tuesday action includes volleyball, and athletics to follow in the coming days.
The CUCSA tournament sees various sporting codes on show with netball, football, basketball, volleyball, and athletics part of the event. Teams from universities and colleges in Southern Africa like, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Malawi are participating for the respective trophies and titles on offer.
