South African wheelchair tennis ace Kgothatso Montjane narrowly missed out on securing her third Grand Slam doubles title at Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday night, 8 June, 2024.
Top seeds Montjane and regular partner Yui Kamiji of Japan, the defending champions, were locked in a tight battle against the Dutch pairing of Diede de Groot and Aniek van Koot, the No 2 seeds.
While Montjane and Kamiji won the first set, and took the second to a tie-break, they ultimately fell in a 7-6 6-7 [4-10] defeat.
Earlier, Netherlands’ wheelchair tennis icon Diede de Groot claimed her fourth successive Roland Garros singles crown, defeating first-time major singles finalist Zhu Zhenzhen 4-6 6-2 6-3.
Looking ahead, de Groot will look to claim a fourth consecutive Wimbledon title, before returning to Paris to put up her Paralympic gold defence in both the singles and doubles.
