Proteas Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt was awarded the distinguished honours of being unveiled as captain and opening bat of both the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year 2024 and ICC Women’s T20 Team of the Year 2024, on Friday, 28 January, 2025.

Wolvaardt’s honours were unveiled in a week of rolling announcements and celebrations by the cricket world governing body, culminating with the unveiling of New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr for the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award’s ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.

Wolvaardt was a triple nominee after being shortlisted for the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year – won by Amelia Kerr; the ODI Cricketer of the Year – won by Smriti Mandhana; and the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year – won by Amelia Kerr despite dazzling performances by the SA opener in the year under review.

South Africa opening pace bowler Marizanne Kapp was the only other Proteas Women player also named in both teams, while up-and-coming star Annerie Dercksen was the only South African woman cricketer to earn an individual gong in the global sports body’s honours list.

A new shining light for women’s cricket in SA, including as part of the Proteas Women’s team that made the final of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Dercksen walked away with the ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year Award for 2024.

After making her debut in 2023, Dercksen has cemented herself as one of the up-and-coming players of the game, and has earned caps for South Africa in all formats of the game, after also making her Test and ODI debut in 2024.

New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr was awarded the top prize of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award for her exploits on the field as a top all-rounder. She was impressive with bat and ball for her national team, solidifying her status as the top women’s cricketer.

Kerr also picked up the Women’s T20 Cricketer of the Year gong after what can only be described as a sensational performance in the short format of the game. She scored 387 and took 29 wickets in 18 matches.

Smriti Mandhana, meanwhile, was crowned the Women’s ODI Cricketer of 2024. The well-established Indian player recorded a whopping 747 in just 13 matches, proving why she is still at the top of her game. She also made history by becoming the first woman to score four ODI centuries in the year.

The ICC Women’s Associate Cricketer of the Year was won by the United Arab Emirates captain Esha Oza. She has been instrumental to her team’s causes, as she led from the front with the bat and ball in T20 cricket, amassing 711 runs and 16 wickets in 20 matches.
