Prudence Sekgodiso continues to obliterate records on the track as the athlete eclipsed the South African women’s 800m indoor record, clocking a time of 1:59.88 at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany, on Friday, 7 February 2025.

This result comes after Sekgodiso got her season off to a sensational start, shattering the South African women’s short track 800m record at the Belgrade Indoor Meeting in Serbia on Wednesday, 29 January 2025.

The middle-distance runner improved on her time this week and became the second athlete to go under the two-minute mark this year. She had a terrific race as she powered past her fellow runners from fourth place to take the victory.

She looked completely calm as she manoeuvered past race leader Habitam Alemu in the home stretch and when Sekgodiso crossed the line and saw her finishing time, she was nothing short of overjoyed.

“The overall race was good. I tried to stay with the pace and managed to come through in the end. I enjoyed it very much,” said an elated Sekgodiso after the race on the Africa Athletics site

Home favourite Matjie Kolberg took second place as Ethiopia’s Alemu was not able to keep up her pace, and had to settle for third spot.

Given the start Sekgodiso has to 2025, she has certainly shown she is set for big things on track in the coming year.
