South Africa’s 800m sensation, Prudence Sekgodiso, is grabbing global headlines after setting a new personal best of 1:57.26 at the Wanda Diamond League in the Meeting International Mohammed VI in Marrakech, Morocco, on Sunday, 19 May, 2024.

This remarkable time is not only a personal best achievement but also the fastest in the world this year.

Following her stunning win, Sekgodiso expressed her excitement: “Thank you, I am so excited! I’m over the moon! I cannot wait to speak to my coach and hear what he has to say. I feel like crying but I can’t because of my coach. But to be honest, I just want to get to my phone and reply to all the messages. I’m just over the moon!”

Sekgodiso has been building up to this performance for some time. In March, she sent a stern warning to her competitors ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games.

The 22-year-old achieved a personal best of 1:58.05 in the 800m at a league meet in Tshwane, securing her spot for Paris 2024. This time places her as the second fastest woman in the 800m, behind only the legendary Caster Semenya.

With #Paris2024 looming, all eyes are on Sekgodiso and the prospect of her bringing home Olympic gold, following in the footsteps of Semenya, a double Olympic gold medallist in this distance.
