Middle-distance runner Prudence Sekgodiso opened her season with a bang, obliterating the South African women’s short track 800m record at the Belgrade Indoor Meeting in Serbia on Wednesday, 29 January, 2025.

Competing in the first indoor race of her career, Sekgodiso finished fourth in 2:02.30.

The 23-year-old athlete, who reached the Olympic 800m final in Paris last year, chopped nearly four seconds off the national short track mark of 2:06.05 set by Dominique Scott-Efurd in Fayetteville in January 2016.

“It’s a  good start to the year for her and a major morale booster to her season ahead,” noted James Moloi, the President of Athletics South Africa.

“Her performance last year in the Olympic Games will now prove to be the foundation for this year’s bigger picture. But she will have to push harder in order to reach a global podium finish and make a name for herself.

“I take the opportunity to congratulate her, the coach and all support staff for her achievement. Stay focussed.”
