Marioné Fourie produced the best performance from the women’s continent of Team South Africa on Day 2 of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday, 14 September 2025.
Fourie, the SA record holder in the 100m hurdles, was second in her heat in 12.86 seconds, to qualify for the semifinals of her specialist event to be held on Monday.
Shirley Nekhubui ended sixth in her first-round heat in the 400m event, completing the one-lap race in 51.82 to miss out on a place in the semifinals.
Miranda Coetzee, who formed part of the team who broke the African record in the mixed 4x400m relay heats, trailed home in 57.78 seconds, finishing last in her race in the opening round of the 400m sprint.

“Definitely a tough day in the office for the Rainbow Nation. However, we are happy for those who have qualified to the next rounds of their respective events,” said James Moloi, the President of Athletics South Africa
“There are still a number of athletes still in competition and a bit of pressure is now upon them to fight their way to the respective semi-finals and finals.”
Day 3 action begins in the early hours of Monday, with Miré Reinstorf in the Pole Vault qualification round at 02:05am (CAT), Zenéy van der Walt and Rogail Joseph are set for the 400m Hurdles heats at 04:20, and Marioné Fourie tackles the 100m Hurdles semi-finals at 14:05 for a chance in the late afternoon’s final.
