Marioné Fourie exhibited a blistering pace as she raced to a victory in the 60m hurdles Final 1 in a time of 7.98, after having set a new South African record of 7.91 earlier in her heat at the CMCM Indoor Meet in Luxembourg on Sunday, 19 January 2025.

Italy’s Giada Carmassi finished the final just behind Fourie in time of 8.00 in second place, as Rosina Schneider from Germany came agonising close but finished third in a time of 8.01.

Fourie’s display on Sunday night not only shattered the previous record, but also placed her at number five on the African all-time list for the event.

According to the latest World Athletics 60m Hurdles rankings for the season, Fourie is also the second-fastest runner in her category, with USA sprinter Massai Russell topping the standings with a season’s best of 7.89 at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas in the USA, on 17 January this year.

Fourie’s latest performance doesn’t come as a surprise, the sprint specialist was in fine form heading into the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, breaking national records and bagging two consecutive senior titles.

At the Games, the South African speedster made it to the semi-final of the 100m hurdles, but finished sixth in that race, and did not progress to the final.

After her recent triumph, social media was abuzz with users congratulating Fourie on her achievement. One Instagram post share a picture of the runner and a quote stating: “‘Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence’ – Vince Lombardi.

With such blistering start to 2025, there will be great hope that Fourie will be shattering more records during the year.
