The exciting eighth edition of Varsity Netball competition has been underway in a bio-bubble at Stellenbosch University as Maties Netball leads the log standings after 20 back-to-back matches.

Maties continued their winning streak in this year’s tournament beating the Nelson Mandela University (Madibaz) 62-40 in Round 5 to remain at the top of the log on Wednesday, 25 August 2021.
They never looked in trouble, stretching a 18-8 lead after the first quarter to 33-14 at half-time and 49-25 after the third quarter.
Maties stuck to the basics, which kept the scoreboard ticking over regularly. It was easy pickings for the Maties defenders, who were provided with several loose balls through poor placement by the Madibaz.
University of Pretoria (Tuks) beat University of Johannesburg (UJ) 66-39 in their Varsity Netball clash at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre, while there were also Round 5 wins for North West University (NWU) and University of the Free State (Kovsies).
After a year of no Varsity Netball due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the athletes and organisers are ecstatic to be back in action.
“The amount of work done behind the scenes has been nothing short of phenomenal, and it’s something we’re extremely proud to be part of, even if we aren’t allowed to host spectators. For the first time, all 36 matches of Varsity Netball will be broadcast live on SuperSport,” said Varsity Netball Tournament Manager Xhanti-Lomzi Nesi.
