Mentorship and Sisterhood Fuels Glenrose Xaba

Glenrose Xaba, the trailblazing South African distance runner, is poised to make her mark at the World Cross Country Championships in Serbia, buoyed by her recent triumph at the SPAR 10km race in Cape Town. 

In an interview with gsport before departing South Africa, Xaba highlighted the pivotal role of her coaches, Violet and Caster Semenya, in her journey to success.

Reflecting on her historic win in Cape Town, Xaba expressed her gratitude for the unwavering support and guidance provided by her coaches. “Coach Violet and Coach Caster aren’t just coaches to me; they are mentors and sisters,” she revealed. 

“Their belief in me and their dedication to my development have been instrumental in shaping me as both an athlete and an individual.”

As she prepares for the World Cross Country Championships, Xaba draws inspiration from the invaluable lessons imparted by her coaches. “Their mentorship goes beyond the track; they’ve taught me essential life skills, from financial management to mental resilience,” she explained. 

“Their unwavering support has instilled in me the confidence to pursue excellence on the global stage.”

When asked about her goals for 2024, Xaba remained guarded, citing her coaches’ advice to focus on executing plans before sharing them publicly. However, she hinted at aspirations for excellence in the 10,000m event, aiming to achieve personal bests and leave her mark on the international stage.

Grateful for the backing of her sponsors, including Puma South Africa and Boxer Athletics Club, Xaba emphasised the importance of their support in facilitating her athletic pursuits. “Their sponsorship has provided access to essential training and competition gear, allowing me to focus on my performance,” she acknowledged.

As she embarks on her journey to Serbia, Xaba remains determined to inspire fellow athletes facing challenges on their path to success. “My coaches have taught me the value of perseverance and self-belief,” she shared. “Their mentorship has been invaluable, and I hope to pay it forward by empowering others to pursue their dreams.”

With her coaches by her side, Glenrose Xaba epitomises resilience, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence in sport.
