Team South Africa has amassed a total of 32 gold medals, 32 silver and 42 bronze, for third position as the 13th African Games nears its close, with Egypt assured of a massive leaderboard victory with their haul of 99 gold medals, in a total tally of 187 medals in Accra, Ghana, on Friday, 22 March, 2024.
Nigeria held their own throughout the African sporting showpiece, steadfastly remaining a gold medal or two ahead of South Africa to finish in a deserved continental second place with 46 gold medals, 33 silver and 41 bronze.
Team SA had gone into Friday’s competition with 99 medals, which was a significant improvement on the 83 they won at the previous African Games, in Morocco 2019.
It was a golden evening for Team SA’s athletics squad, which claimed a combined five medals, comprising three golds and two bronze medals, and two more medals came in from boxing, taking the final South African medals tally to 106.
First, Rogail Joseph lifted South African hearts when she became Team SA’s 100th medallist at the 13th African Games in Accra, surging to gold in the women’s 400m hurdles in a time of 55.39 seconds.
In the women’s shot put Ashley Erasmus won gold with a distance of 16.98m to make it three golds on the final evening session of the Games, while Ischke Senekal won SA another bronze medal in the same discipline.
Friday was Team SA’s final day of competition at the Games, and the curtain will officially come down at the closing ceremony on Saturday evening.
