South African Hockey has announced the SPAR SA Indoor Hockey Women side for the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup, the fifth Indoor World Cup appearance for South Africa since the nation’s debut in 2003, on Wednesday, 3 October 2024.
“I am really excited about the team we have selected. It was a tough selection as the players put in a lot of hard work over the last fourteen months.”
SPAR SA Indoor Hockey Women Head Coach, A-J Spieringshoek
They will be hoping to emulate and improve on the performance of the team in 2023 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup, where they charged their way to semi-finals, finishing in fourth place.
The team features eight players from the squad that earned their place in the Semi-Finals of that historic home-based World Cup. That group of players features some of the most experienced players in SA Indoor hockey including Jamie Southgate (95 caps), Tegan Fourie (71), Cheree Greyvenstein (70) and Edith Molikoe (69).
Malikah Hamza and Sarah Paget who made their debuts in the victorious title winning Tuanku Zara Cup side and have cemented their place in the team. While the other two members of the team that were not part of the previous World Cup are Laylaa Davids and Cailynn den Bakker.
The South Africans, currently ranked 7th in the world, will open their World Cup campaign against Thailand on 3 February, 2025, before taking on 2023 runners-up Austria and then completing the group stage with a match against European heavyweights, Poland.
Coach AJ Spieringshoek, who was also a finalist at last month’s gsport Awards, shared his delight on the announcement of the team that was selected.
“We are fortunate to have quite a few players that have experienced a World Cup already, as well as four exciting players that will get to experience it for the first time,” said Spieringshoek. “I’m looking forward to fine-tuning our style of play to ultimately go to the World Cup and compete.”
