South Africa Women concluded their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up campaign with a 28-run loss to India, but the match was highlighted by an outstanding performance from Ayabonga Khaka.

On 1 October 2024, Khaka delivered a superb spell, taking 5 wickets for 25 runs, marking one of the top individual performances in the warm-ups.

Khaka’s precise bowling tore through India’s middle order, dismissing crucial players like Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma. Her five-wicket haul helped restrict India to 144/7 in their 20 overs.

Despite Khaka’s efforts, South Africa’s batting faltered in the chase. Laura Wolvaardt’s 38 off 35 balls and Nadine de Klerk’s unbeaten 28* off 24 balls provided some hope, but South Africa ultimately fell short, ending at 116/6.

In their first warm-up match on 29 September 2024, South Africa also struggled with the bat, managing just 92 runs. New Zealand’s Melie Kerr was the standout performer, claiming 3 wickets for 13 runs before scoring 37 off 37 balls. New Zealand chased down the target with ease, finishing at 95/2 in 14.2 overs to secure an 8-wicket win.

Despite back-to-back defeats, Ayabonga Khaka’s form is a massive positive for South Africa as they prepare for their opening World Cup match against the West Indies on 4 October.

If they can build on Khaka’s exceptional bowling and improve their batting consistency, they will have the chance to make a strong start in the tournament.
