South Africa’s Musfiquh Kalam and Lailaa Edwards may have not progressed to the next stages at the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals, but the rising stars were afforded a platform to showcase their talents to the world.

The World Championships are currently underway at the Durban ICC and will conclude on Sunday, 28 May, when champions will be crowned across various categories.

One of the standouts of the tournament this year has been the opportunity for South Africa’s up and coming players to get their names heard around the globe and learn from the best, as they continue to develop in their respective careers.

In her first match of the tournament, Kalam went on to face Puerto Rico’s Melanie Diaz, in what was a tough encounter as she succumbed to a 4-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5) defeat in the Women’s Singles Round of 128 event.

Kalam then went on to partner Edwards in the Women’s Doubles Round of 64 against Elizabeth Samara and Andrea Dragoman, where their efforts were not enough to secure the win, as they lost 0-3 (2-11, 4-11, 3-11).

All eyes will be on Kalam and Edwards, as the promising players will be eager to build on their performances, heading into various continental and international tournaments to hopefully bring home championship victory in future.
