South Africa’s Simone Ackermann and Gillian Sanders lived up to their billing earning first and second place, respectively, at the Africa Triathlon in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.
Ackermann topped the elite women’s race, finishing in 2:16:09, while her countrymate, Sanders, came in second in 2:16:57.
Sharing on her Instagram, Sanders said: “Nice to be on a podium again. It’s been a while.
“2nd at the African Championships in Sharm El Sheikh Egypt this past weekend. It was a brutal race with extreme heat & crazy winds.
“The highlight was jumping in the hotel pool afterward. Well done to my countrywoman Simone Ackermann for the win and Egypt’s Basmla Elsalamoney for 3rd.”
Two other South Africans – Bridget Theunissen and Hannah Newman – placed fourth and fifth in the race.
