South Africa was crowned the champion of the girls’ competition at the CAF African Schools Football Championship COSAFA Qualifier in Walvis Bay, Namibia on Sunday, 13 October 2024.

The South Africans came from behind to beat Malawi 3-1 to secure the win.

It was their Southern African opponents that took the early lead via Rejoice Silungwe leaving the South Africans on the back foot. The goal was also the first one that Ntombifuthi Khumalo’s team conceded in the competition.

But it was not long before there was an equaliser from the South Africans, and it was none other than Leonay Kock who is also the tournament’s top goalscorer. She followed that up by scoring a second, with Lethuthando Mthembu netting a third to seal what was a big victory for the U15 side.

South Africa’s phenomenal performances saw them walk away with the top prizes from the competition. Kock was awarded the Golden Boot, her teammate, goalkeeper Mia Heneke won the Golden Glove, and Malawi was awarded the Fair Play title.

South Africa is the current CAF African Schools Football Champions. They won the tournament earlier this year when they beat Morocco on penalties in May.
