Sports Presenter Xoli Zondo Speaks on Importance of Education

by | Feb 10, 2020

Xoli Zondo is predominantly known to the South African public as a Sports Presenter for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), but there is much more to her than what meets the eye.

Her career in sports began when she won the 2014 SABC Presenter Search, but at the time, Zondo was already an Environmental Scientist and is currently on her way to completing her Master’s in Business Administration.

She chatted to gsport’s Celine Abrahams at The Zone in Rosebank, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 29 January 2020, about her educational achievements and why she strives to excel in her studies.

“It has been life changing,” Zondo comments on her education.

“I sometimes have to find the adjective to describe what a difficult process it is to be doing your MBA.

“You grow not only academically in terms of your research but also as a person. You realise how much stamina you need to have and focus in order to complete this degree.

“I am about a month away from completing it and hopefully in June I’ll be on that graduation stage,” she commented.

“I realised when you begin to work harder even the circumstance around you change.” 2019 Momentum Public Choice Award winner and SABC Sports Presenter, Xoli Zondo.

Zondo believes that it is important to be versatile and to have a backup plan in place as she intends to take a different step in her life considering the harsh realities of her upbringing.

“When I think of my bringing, it really wasn’t great. So, for me, the drive is always to work harder because I realised when you begin to work harder even the circumstance around you change.

“There are a lot of things happening in my life that really shouldn’t when you look at the background and the life that I was born in to.

“But, I’m really of the belief that when you work hard and you try and get yourself an education, you are edging closer.”

One of the highlights in her career was winning the Public Choice Award at the 2019 Momentum gsport Awards ceremony which was accepted by her sister on her behalf.

“I didn’t get a chance to thank every single person that voted.

“To this day it breaks my heart that I wasn’t on that stage when my name was called out. That is my first award and it has a beautiful space in my living room, no one touches it!”

Zondo’s hopes for the future is to see more women dominating the corporate space and South African women athletes owning the global stage. Check out the full interview in the slider above!
