In a display of sheer determination and unyielding resilience, the Springbok Women left an indelible mark on the rugby pitch, going head-to-head with the formidable Barbarians in a gripping match that ended with a scoreline of 38-26 (half-time 28-14) on a blustery day in Cape Town.

While the result may not have tilted in their favour, the Springbok Women showcased unwavering resolve throughout the contest. Facing an early surge from the Barbarians, who notched two tries within the first 10 minutes, the South Africans remained undaunted, determined to defy history after their previous encounter with the same opponent resulted in a 60-5 defeat in London two years ago.

This time, the Springbok Women’s resurgence was marked by set-piece brilliance. Catha Jacobs ignited their comeback, securing the first try from a scrum, while Micke Gunter, displaying impeccable prowess, claimed the second try from a precisely executed line-out.

As the match progressed, the Barbarians made valiant efforts, but once again found themselves up against the unyielding Springbok Women. Gunter notched another impressive set-piece try early in the second half, narrowing the gap.

At the 60-minute mark, the Barbarians staged a comeback of their own, crafting a well-orchestrated set-piece try from a line-out, with flanker Vicky Fleetwood crossing the line to make it 33-21. The Bok Women’s rhythm faced a setback when their playmaker, Libbie Janse van Rensburg, received a yellow card during a tense second half. The Barbarians capitalised on this temporary advantage, adding to their tally.

Yet, even as the odds seemed stacked against them, the Springbok Women’s defence held firm, and their spirit remained unbreakable until the final whistle. Sinazo Mcatshulwa, a true powerhouse, powered her way over the line to bring the score to 38-26, moments before the end.

In the closing moments of the match, the Barbarians retained possession, but the Springbok Women’s tenacious defence proved unyielding. A final tackle near the touchline brought the game to a close, with the Barbarians emerging victorious at 38-26.
