It was much of the same for the South African Women’s Indoor Hockey team who lost their second match to Switzerland 3-1 in a repeat of the first test, the visitors went down by the same scoreline a day before in the series opening match in Basel on Wednesday, 31 January, 2024
In a rather uncanny set of events, it was not only the same scoreline as in the match a day before, but also almost identical scorers too.
Like on Wednesday, it was South Africa who got on the score sheet first as Malika Hamza gave them the early lead, via a penalty corner in the fifteenth minute on Wednesday.
It looked like the visiting side would be off to a flying start but that was not meant to be. Two goals from Switzerland’s Sofie Stomps saw her team take the lead, much like in the previous encounter. AJ Spieringshoek’s team searched for the that all important goal but it never came.
The final opportunity fell to the Swiss and Elana Trösch made no mistake in making sure her team sealed the victory. They now take a 2-0 lead in the six-match series.
No doubt that the South Africans will to go back to the drawing board to look at how to improve as the rest of the series awaits. They will have some time to regroup with no matches on Thursday.
However, with the last four matches all in a tight scheduled two a day on Friday and Saturday, the visitors will be up against it to turn their fortunes around, as they look to possibly shake things up and get a series win.
On Friday, the first match of the day between the two teams takes place at 13:15, while the second game will be played at 17:30.
