Switzerland hosts South Africa for a six-match indoor hockey test series tour in Basel beginning Tuesday, 30 January, for their first international series of 2024.
The South African team has arrived in Basel, and coach AJ Spieringshoek previously announced the twelve-strong South African team to do battle in national colours.
The team has been fairly busy in recent times, and even have recent court time against the Swiss, when the plucky South African team upset expectations to beat their European contenders in a titanic tussle, to be crowned Tuanku Zara International Cup champions in the final in Ipoh, Perak in Malaysia, on Saturday, 11 November 2023.
South Africa managed to come out on top after the final ended 1-1 in regulation time, which saw the match go to shootout and then Sudden Death, where the South Africans pushed through for the win
Next, the South Africans hosted neighbours Namibia and the Republic of Ireland at the Kathea Nkosi Cup at the Wynberg Military base on Tuesday, in the second half of December 2023.
South Africa played an excellent tournament, beating all comers before qualifiying for the final, when a surprise Namibia package outclassed the tournament hosts 4-2 to dash the hopes of a vocal home crowd and lift the cup.
The six-test series away to Switzerland will be a perfect battleground for coach Spieringshoek to test his no. 6 world-ranked charges against known enemy that is ranked 15th, but who present a far fiercer challenge than that score would suggest.
