Team South Africa outshined Zimbabwe 3-0 to win their first match of the Hockey Africa Cup of Nations in Accra, Ghana on Monday, 17 January 2022.
Lilian du Plessis scored South Africa’s first goal in the 9th minute before captain Bernadette Coston converted a penalty corner in the 12th minute to double the lead.
The second and third quarters proved to be most competitive as both sides failed to convert their chances to goals. South Africa pushed harder in the final quarter with Tarryn Glasby sealing the 3-0 win.
Namibia also registered a victory against debutants Uganda.
After no goals in the first 40 minutes of the match, Anthea Coetzee and Sascha Brinkmann’s goals in the final 10 minutes of the third quarter gave the Namibians a strong lead into the fourth quarter.
Taramarie Myburgh scored Namibia’s third goal in the 56th minute.
The West African derby between Ghana and Nigeria ended in a stalemate. Ghanaian Elizabeth Opoku scored the first goal in the 12th minute before Esther Njoka scored an equalizer a minute later.
Benedicta Johnson’s clinical finish in the 55th minute saw Nigeria lead 2-1. Martha Sarfo then scored a late equalizer in the 60th minute to end the derby 2-2.
The game between Kenya and Zambia failed to take place and has been rescheduled to Wednesday.
Fixtures continue Tuesday, 18 January, with South Africa taking on Namibia and Zimbabwe locking horns with Uganda, while Nigeria play Zambia and Kenya battle Ghana.
