At the 2000 Laureus Sport Awards in Monaco late President Nelson Mandela said: “Sport has the power to change the world,” and that is something we have all witnessed over the years – sport changing the world!
But in order for us to change the world through sport we have to start investing in rural and school sport, because everything starts at grassroot level.
This is a cause which Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa firmly believes in.
The Minister spent time at Mpheko Secondary School in Mthatha over the weekend: “Today was yet another great display of how sport brings rural communities together. It is for these reasons we must continue to invest in schools and rural sport development. I thank the foundations and private companies involved.”

The Youth and Women Empowerment Programme, Gcinabantu Hutchinson Ngcukayitobi Foundation in collaboration with the Black Hawk Foundation hosted a netball and soccer tournament. As seen on the videos and pictures posted by the Minister, there were a number of teams participating in the tournament and the winners were awarded with medals and trophies.
The Minister also added that more people should start to invest into rural and school sport
development. He also mentioned that the department will ensure that more investments happen so that more schools in the rural areas can host the Schools Sport Championships.
