SA captain Lara Weinstein and Sylvia Masango combined for a final round five under 135 to give the team a 41 stroke victory over nearest challengers, Swaziland, on a winning total of 27-under-par 405.

Central Gauteng’s Weinstein reeled in five birdies on her way to a three-under-par 69 while Masango from Gauteng North responded with six birdies for a two under 70.

Tshwane’s Magda Kruger carded a final round while Devonvale’s Bianca Theron closed with a 74.

South Africa won the inaugural event held at the Phakalane Golf Estate in Botswana in 2007, and won the subsequent events in 2009 and 2011, held at the Nkonyeni Course in Swaziland and Royal Harare in Zimbabwe respectively.

“This was a team effort and we played for each other,” 18-year-old Weinstein said. “We were determined to follow in the footsteps of our predecessors, and we are so proud that we could continue South Africa’s tradition in this event and fly the flag for our country.”

Kruger from Centurion carded rounds of 65-64-71 for a 543-hole total of 16-under-par 200 to win the Individual Competition. The 17-year-old Centurion golfer finished 10 shots ahead of South Africa’s number one ranked player, Nobuhle Dlamini, who posted rounds of 73-73-65. Dlamini finished one shot ahead of Weinstein. Theron took fourth on 217 and Masango finished in fifth place on 220.

Masango said the value of the Regional All-Africa events could not be underestimated.

“South Africa may have won the title, but all six teams won in terms of growth and development,” said Masango from Woodhill Country Club.

“It was fantastic to compete on an international platform like this. I think a competition like this inspires everyone to dig a little deeper and to do our best for our countries.”

In addition to the Southern Africa RAACT, three more Regional All-Africa Challenge Trophy events are held biennially in West Africa, North Africa and East/Central Africa. All these tournaments are financially supported by the Royal and Ancient of St Andrews (R&A).
