The Spar Proteas are stepping up preparations for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 Netball World Cup events as they are set to take on the three top sides in the world in the Netball Quad Series from Saturday, 15 January 2021, in London.

Team Captain, Bongi Msomi, will be aiming to continue her leadership both on and off the court as the side will be looking to proudly fly the country’s flag on the global stage.

The third-highest capped player for South Africa, who was listed among the 10 #GAL2021 Newsmakers of the Year in December, led the senior national team to glory as they retained their title as 2021 African Netball Champions in Namibia.

At the gsport Annual List event, Msomi was beaming after earning recognition by gsport as she added another accolade to her cabinet trophy in a year which saw her sign a lucrative deal with internationally renowned agency, Roc Nation Sports.

“I feel excited, obviously! I love what I do and getting to stand here receiving awards is an incredible feeling,” she revealed.

Despite winning the Africa Netball Cup title, it has been a challenging year for the national team, however Msomi says they are looking forward to representing South Africa at the Quad Series against England, Australia, and New Zealand.

“To be honest, one has to be excited heading into the Quad Series. Coming from an African tournament and heading into a global one is obviously a different ball game but one that we as a team are looking forward to.

“For us as the Spar Proteas this is to see where we are and where we stand on the world stage. One needs to want to play against the top countries in the world to be able to better themselves, especially heading into the next World Cup, which we have the honour of hosting,” added Msomi.

The seasoned netball star, who was named by World Netball as African Athlete Ambassador ahead of the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town, will be aiming to gain as much confidence and momentum on the road as the team prepares to host the world at the International Convention Centre.

“It is an exciting time for netball in South Africa and as players we are honoured to be part of history in the sport.

“We are preparing as much as we can because we know what we are up against come the World Cup. We obviously have intentions of bettering our previous World Cup position, especially in front of our home crowd and we want to make South Africa proud,” she continued.

“It is a very exciting time for us and next year, we will be taking every opportunity to play, hopefully Covid does not mess with our preparations,” concluded Msomi.

The South African’s will take part in the Netball Quad Series from 15-18 January, with the final matches set to take place on the 19th.
