Chloe Tryon’s batting was a local highlight in an otherwise forgettable day for the Proteas Women and their supporters, after South Africa were put in to bat at Kingsmead, only to be bowled out cheaply out by England, who went on cruise to their first win of the ICC Women’s Championship series at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead in Durban on Sunday, 8 December, 2024. South Africa were put in to bat at Kingsmead this morning, and after a contrasting start, were bowled cheaply out by England, who went on cruise to their first win of the ICC Women’s Championship series in the second ICC Women’s Championship ODI by 6 wickets, with 156 balls to spare, at the Kimberley Oval on Sunday, 8 December, 2024

Spinner Charlie Dean delivered the standout performance of the day to propel England to the massive win over the Proteas Women in the fourth annual Black Day ODI, squaring the series 1-1 ahead of Wednesday’s final ODI fixture.

Dean showcased her prowess with the ball, claiming figures of four for 45, while her spin partner Sophie Ecclestone provided strong support with three for 27. Together, they dismissed South Africa’s batting lineup, restricting them to 135 all out. England’s batters then chased the modest target with ease, reaching it within 24 overs.

After losing the toss and being sent into bat, South Africa endured early setbacks. Lauren Filer (3/32) dismissed both Tazmin Brits (5) and Suné Luus (4) in the opening four overs, leaving the hosts on 14/2.

Marking her 100th ODI appearance — becoming the youngest player in women’s ODI history to achieve this milestone, surpassing Mithali Raj — captain Laura Wolvaardt (35) anchored the innings alongside the emerging Annerie Dercksen (29). The duo added 58 runs for the third wicket, stabilising the innings at 72/2.

Just as the Proteas appeared to find their footing, England struck decisively. Dean and Ecclestone combined to spark a collapse, dismissing Wolvaardt, Dercksen, and Marizanne Kapp (0) in quick succession.

Dean’s brilliance continued as she completed a hat-trick, removing Nadine de Klerk (0) and Sinalo Jafta (0) to leave South Africa teetering at 76/7, losing four wickets for just four runs.

Chloe Tryon then displayed resilience, crafting a determined 45 off 49 balls, including eight boundaries. She partnered with tail-enders Nonkululeko Mlaba (4) and Ayabonga Khaka (1*) to drag the score beyond the 100-run mark.

England, however, soon wrapped up the innings, with Filer and Ecclestone finishing the job, bowling the Proteas out for 135 in 31.3 overs.

In response, England’s openers Maia Bouchier (33) and Tammy Beaumont (34) laid a solid foundation with a 69-run stand. Dercksen provided a breakthrough, dismissing Bouchier in the 12th over. She followed this with Beaumont’s wicket, while the experienced Marizanne Kapp (1/14) trapped Heather Knight (7) LBW, reducing England to 82/3.

Needing 54 runs to win, Danni Wyatt-Hodge (25*) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (20) forged a crucial 47-run partnership to steer England to the brink of victory. Although Sciver-Brunt fell to de Klerk (1/25), Wyatt-Hodge saw her team home, with England securing the win with 26 overs to spare.

With the series all square with a win a piece, all eyes will be on the final ODI – a day/night 2pm in Potchefstroom on Wednesday will crown the series victors, spreading cheer along with eagerly-earned ICC Women’s Championship points.
