Still fresh from having qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024, South African Women’s Hockey team were back on the turf in front of a home crowd at Maties in Cape Town, in the first of two home match Test Series against Germany on Friday, 24 November 2023.

Laylaa Davids earned her first test cap for her country in what was a special day for her and her family. Experienced player Dirkie Chamberlain made a return to the national side for her 242th test match and first for the country since February 2020.

The game could not have started better for South Africa with a brilliant play by Edith Molikoe and Quanita Bobbs, as South Africa took the lead, that would make a snooker player proud.

The South African defence was resilient and inspired the crowd that showed up to support the home team but the Germans remained patient and confident in their attack. Nike Lorenz provided the equaliser through a penalty corner just inside the end of the first quarter.

It was a momentary lapse in concentration from the South Africans as Germany secured their second goal courtesy of Pia Maertens and, going into half-time, Jette Fleschütz played a neat tap-in at the back of the post to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.

The second half was a fantastic battle of resilience and determination from both teams but neither was able to score, with Germany taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

The second and final test match takes place on Sunday at 11h00, at SACS, and will be streamed live on the SuperSport Schools app.
