The South African Women’s Indoor Hockey team’s opponent for the final of the Tuanku Zara Cup has been decided. They will take on Switzerland in Ipoh, Perak in Malaysia on Saturday, 11 November 2023.
On Friday, the South Africans took on the Swiss in their last pool match having already secured their place in the final.
Switzerland inflicted SA’s first loss of the competition when they secured a 6-2 victory.
South Africa fielded a relatively young team, with the oldest player being 25-years-old. It was an uphill battle for the finalists as their opponents scored 4 goals by the 23rd minute.
However, South Africa fought back, with Cailynn den Bakker and Tegan Fourie scoring for the team.
The two sides will meet again on Saturday having finished in first and second place respectively.
Australia will take on hosts Malaysia for the Bronze medal match. Namibia ended the competition in 5th place as New Zealand claimed 6th spot at the event.
Earlier in the tournament South Africa had a flawless record, they started things off with a narrow 3-2 win over Malaysia. In their second match they thrashed New Zealand 8-0. On Thursday they took on neighbours Namibia and got a 2-1 win and then went to on beat Australia 4-0.
