The South African Women’s Indoor Hockey team had another successful day where they recorded two more wins at the Tuanku Zara Cup in Ipoh, Perak in Malaysia on Thursday, 9 November 2023.
South Africa started the day with a narrow 2-1 win over neighbours Namibia and then upped the ante with a 4-0 victory over Australia. They have now secured their place at the final of the competition.
In the game against Namibia there were no goals in the first half but things improved in the second period, it was again Tegan Fourie who got South Africa on the score sheet as Kayla de Waal doubled the lead for her team.
But Namibia didn’t give up, and their fight showed and paid off as they managed to salvage a consolation goal.
In their second match of the day the South Africa women were in top gear, and displayed what has been dubbed their best performance in the tournament with their comprehensive clean sheets win over the Aussies.
It was again Fourie who got the first goal for her team, and De Waal backed her up with the second of the game.
Fourie made it 3-0 before Cailynn den Bakker scored their fourth, ensuring that South Africa got the victory.
South Africa tops the standings with 12 points after Switzerland suffered a surprise defeat, to hosts Malaysia.
SA will face Switzerland in their final group match at 2:30am (SA Time) on Friday, 10 November 2023.
Team South Africa will meet either the Swiss or Australia in the final on Saturday, 11 November 2023.
