During the month of August, South African women in sport dominated headlines with ground-breaking achievements on the global stage, resulting in a fierce monthly #GAL2022 Newsmakers list, powered by the Momentum gsport Newsroom in partnership with Telkom.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham was an exciting time for Team South Africa as athletes topped the podium in various sporting codes at the competition.
Swim sensations Lara van Niekerk and Tatjana Schoenmaker claimed gold and silver, respectively, in the 100m breaststroke event at the Games to add to their medal tally.
Michaela Whitebooi and Charné Griesel put SA Judo on the map with Whitebooi claiming the country’s first ever gold medal in the sporting code at the competition in the 48kg category, while Griesel earned bronze in the 52kg event.
Another highlight saw gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz bag bronze as she completed the final of uneven bars with a pleasant 13.500 points.
