In a great start to the new year for Hildah Magaia and Sinoxolo Cesane, Mexico’s Mazatlán F.C. Femenil announced that the Banyana Banyana duo have both been signed up on Tuesday, 2 January 2024.

‘Breadwinner’ – as Magaia is fondly known – joins from the South Korean side, Sejong Sportstoto WFC, while Cesane leaves East Tennessee University in the USA for the new signing.

Magaia has certainly earned that nickname as she was not only a pivotal player in claiming the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations, but she was also instrumental in helping Banyana reach their historic FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

She famously scored in South African’s 3-2 win over Italy to book their place in the last 16, but they fell to a defeat to the Netherlands.

Cesane has her own skills that has come in handy, she got her first national team call-up for their two matches against the US Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) back in September, since then things have been steadily been progressing, as she also graduated with a university degree.

The pair will now be playing with fellow Banyana teammates Thembi Kgatlana and Jermaine Seoposenwe in Liga MX. Kgatlana made a move from Racing Louisville to Tigres Femenil in what was a record deal, as the second-highest fee in the National Women’s Soccer League’s (NSWL) history.

Of the three players, Seoposenwe has the most experience in the Mexican League having joined FC Juarez in 2022 scoring six goals during her time with the club. She then made a move to Monterrey where she signed a two-year deal before the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

Meanwhile, Mazatlán F.C. Femenil went through a rebrand in 2020, where a new crest and club colours were unveiled, and with it came a more positive change in the boardroom as Jessica Castañeda was named as director, making her only the second woman with a managerial position in the Liga MX Femenil.
