Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet smashed the women’s world 5km record at the Cursa dels Nassos, in Barcelona in a time of 14 minutes and 13 seconds, when she pulled away from the pack of four chases to set the iconic record in Spain on Sunday, 31 December, 2023.

Chebet’s feat surpassed the previous women’s only record of 14:29, set by Senbere Teferi from Ethiopia in Herzogenaurach, on 12 September, 2021.

Chebet’s time is also faster than the women’s world record set in a mixed-gender race, which stood at 14:19, and was run by Ejegayehu Taye of Ethiopia, also in September at the 2021 Cursa dels Nassos.

This meet, a World Athletics Label road race, was a race of spectacular speed as the top three medallists all dipped under the previous record.

The previous record-holder Taye finished second behind Chebet, clocking 14:21, while Kenya’s Lilian Kasait Rengeruk was third in 14:26, wrapping up the top three.

Speaking to World Athletics after the race Chebet said: “I came to Barcelona determined to better the world record, as I felt capable of that. This world record means a lot for me; I can’t believe it.”

Uganda’s Joy Cheptoyek finished fourth but impressively, she also set a mark faster that time, crossing the finish line at 14:28.

Another performance worth noting is that of 18 year-old Ethiopian, Medina Eisa, who clocked the fastest ever women’s 5km by an athlete under 20.

Chebet also won the world cross country crown in Bathurst in February 2023, and won the world 5000m bronze in Budapest in the World Athletics Championships.
