The Momentum Proteas have levelled the series 1-1 against West Indies after defeating the tourists by a massive 96 runs, in the third ODI at Imperial Wanderers Stadium on Thursday, 03 February 2022.

The South African team that stepped out onto the field included three changes to their starting line-up, with Anneke Bosch, Raisibe Ntozakhe and Nadine De Klerk getting a chance to showcase their talent.

Suné Luus won the toss and elected to bat but SA lost two wickets within the first 10 overs.

Star opener, Laura Wolvaardt, played one of the best innings we have seen from her. She was well supported by Luus. Wolvaardt remained calm and played her natural game. She scored her 22nd ODI half century of 70 balls and hit five fours, but she was not done yet. Luus and Wolvaardt set a new third wicket partnership of 141 for South African Women in ODI’s before Luus was bowled for 56 (93 balls) with five fours by Anisa Mohammed.

Wolvaardt went on to score a match winning 117 (123 balls) smashing eleven fours and one six before she was dismissed by Chinelle Henry. The Proteas steadily put runs on the board with a last-minute burst from Chloé Tryon, who smashed a quick fire 43 (24 balls) with two fours and three big sixes. The Momentum Proteas, a much more settled and confident team, scored 299/8 in their innings ,setting a target of 300 for the Caribbean team.

South Africa’s bowlers worked their magic as Ayabonga Khaka picked up from where she left off on Monday night by claiming two wickets within the first four overs. One of those wickets being the wicket of the destructive Deandra Dottin. The Caribbean side failed to put together a sustainable partnership with the South African bowling attack applying constant pressure and claiming wickets at regular intervals.

Kycia Knight was the only West Indian that was able to bat past the South African bowling defence before she was caught and bowled by Raisibe Ntozakhe for 69 (94 balls) with seven fours in her effort to get her team over the finish line.

Shabnim Ismail found her form by claiming two wickets from two balls in the 37th over, leaving the West Indian team on 171/7, with a further 129 required for victory. But it was not to be for the Caribbean side as they were bowled out for 203 in 44.4 overs with Shabnim Ismail claiming the final wicket of Aaliyah Alleyne who came in for Stafanie Taylor as a concussion substitute. Ismail ended with bowling figures of 8.4-37-4

The two teams will play in the series decider, which is also the #BlackDay match, on Sunday 6 February 2022. Match is live on SuperSport at 10h00.
