India U19 B have won the the Youth T20 International Tri-Series trophy, chasing down the asking total to beat South Africa U19 by 8 wickets in the final at the MCA Cricket Stadium in Gahunje, Pune in India, on Thursday, 12 December, 2024.

India B had been the form team of the tournament, unbeaten in four group stage matches before Thursday’s final, aided perhaps by winning tosses and making sure to invite the opposition to bat first, the strategy working in their favour as they chased down each total in a title-winning campaign.

On Thursday India B captain Niki Prasad didn’t hesitate to ask SA skipper Kayla Reyneke to bat first, but her bowlers didn’t find immediate success, the SA opening partnership of 56 of Simoné Lourens 33 runs in 30 balls and Jemma Botha 34 (27 balls) an inspiring start to the South Africans’ innings.

Botha was the first to fall, and Chanel Venter wasn’t able to add runs before losing her wicket, but her departure brought Reyneke to the middle, where the U19 SA captain and Lourens combined for a promising 31-run partnership.

Reyneke continued the momentum in a quick fire 30-run partnership with Karabo Meso once Lourens lost her wicket, who added runs at a tempo equal to Reyneke, before the Indian U19 captain bagged the keeper’s wicket, run out for 15.

Once Meso was gone and Reyneke 37 (29) departed 6 deliveries later, Diara Ramlakan 8*(6) and Mieke de Voorst 12*(10) did more than the job that could be expected, and took South Africa U19 to their innings total of 142/5 in their 20 overs.

SA taliswoman Jemma Botha struck first in India U19 B’s reply, pinning back Bharti Upadaya’s 9(10) wickets in the sixth over, but the visitors’ only other breakthrough was No.3 Aayushi Shukla 1(6), sent back to the change room when Fay Cowling took her wicket in the next over.

The rest the SA bowlers went unrewarded, and Monalisa Legodi and Ashleigh van Wyk’s single overs each were heavily punished, in particular, as home keeper / opening bat G Kamalini 79* (62 balls) crafted a winning partnership with captain Prasad 49 (31) to take the side to a well-deserved title with 13 balls to spare.
