The South African Under-12 Girls were gold medal winners at the ITF/CAT Southern African Junior Zonal Teams’ Competition, clinching the top prize thanks to some commanding performances in the event in Maputo, Mozambique, from 6 to 10 August, 2024.
South Africa began their tournament in group A against Lesotho, where the players were able to easily get the better of their opponents. Lily Haley beat Tlotla Mpiti in straight sets 6-0; 6-0, as Winnie Masemola followed suit getting a 6-0; 6-1 win over Toloane Ntsepase.
Masemola teamed up with Gabriella Coetzee for the doubles, where they were able to earn an unbeaten win over Liteboho Chakache and Ntsepase 6-0; 6-0.
The South Africans looked unstoppable on their second day, with Haley getting proceedings off with a win over Madagascar’s Ramanapanoharana, who faced an onslaught from the South African for the 6-2; 6-0 result. Coetzee brushed aside Koloina Randriamananjara 6-0; 6-2 with a similar score line.
Haley and Masemola made easy work of their doubles match against Realy Faniriana Andrianiaina and Randriamananjara, with a 6-1; 6-0 victory.
These phenomenal performances saw South Africa then take on Botswana in the semi-finals of the competition, where it was much of the same from the players from Mzansi! For the first time in the tournament, Haley dropped four sets and was pushed harder, but came away with a 6-2; 6-2 win over Malak Macheng.
Coetzee made easy work of her match against her Southern African opponent Camila Seetso 6-0; 6-1. It was another easy win for doubles pair Coetzee and Masemola who stormed to victory 6-0; 6-0 over Angel Chakanyuka and Macheng.
Madagascar triumphed over Zimbabwe in the other semi-final which saw them face South Africa for a second time.
Haley made no mistake and got another victory against Ramanapanoharana in their second singles contest. Coetzee then sealed the sensational victory for her team with a 6-0; 6-1 against Randriamananjara, who she also took on for a second time.
