Upstarts and Old Hands Eye Athletics SA Senior Champs

Mapaseka Makhanya is one of the headline stars lined up for the SA Athletics Champs, from 12-13 April in Stellenbosch, where she will contest the 1500m and 5000m events alongside Lebo Phalula. With the SA Senior Championships fast approaching, all roads will lead to Stellenbosch where the best athletes will descend on Coetzenburg stadium for the two day championships, from 12-13 April 2013.

Some of the big names in South African athletics will compete including a number of SA record holders and defending champions, but new and upcoming talent will be looking to make their mark this weekend.

Some new faces include the junior Labuschagne triplets, Olivia, Alicia and Sindy, who will line up in the 3000m steeplechase with familiar faces Nolene Conrad and the SA record holder Tebogo Masehla.

Masehla will defend her title after winning in Port Elizabeth in 10:12.12 while Conrad will be hoping to improve on her third place finish at the previous championships. She will also double in the women’s 1500m.faces

The 24 year-old SA Marathon Champion Cornelia Joubert will be amongst the athletes in the lineup for the women’s 10000m. She has always been involved with track athletics, and won the first marathon she ever competed in, in 2008, where she competed in the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m.

Mpho Mabuza will be back to defend her title. She won the event in 23:33.46 in Port Elizabeth on 14 April last year.

Other women to showcase their talents at the championships include Wenda Nel (previously Theron) in the 400m hurdles, Olympian Sunette Viljoen in the javelin throw, Elizna Naude in the discus throw, Janice Josephs in the long jump, Mapaseka Makhanya and Lebo Phalula in the 1500m and 5000m.

The program will start at 09:00 on the first day of competition and 06:30 on the final day. The full program is available on www.athletics.org.za. Adults will pay R20, students and high school pupils R10 while children under the age of 6 years will enter for free.
