It may not be going so well for the Springboks in the rugby tri-nations, but at least South Africa have claimed the canoeing Tri-Nations title during the Multiplex Avon Descent in Australia.
South Africans Abbey Miedema and Steven Bruss won the men’s and women’s kayak sections. Miedema, who won the Isuzu Berg River Canoe Marathon recently, was in a class of her own, winning the women’s title by a massive margin and sealing victory for South Africa over Australia and New Zealand in the annual tri-nations competition.
Miedema finished seventeenth overall, and coped well on the tough 75-kilometre final stage to overtake three male competitors in the T-tree sections in the gorge on the Avon River, before reaching the tough three-hour grind across the Swan River estuary.
"Thank goodness I did the Isuzu Berg, because I needed the base for this race," Miedema said afterwards. "Still, seven hours on the final day is a new record time in the boat for me."
Racing in low river conditions, which resulted in the slowest race times in history, Bruss won by eight minutes from fellow South African and defending champion, Darryl Bartho and Australian paddler Simon Roll.
