All to Play for as Top Three Eye Final Week 1 Ties at the TNL in Johannesburg

Day eight of the Telkom Netball League shook the arena with unexpected victories that left fans and analysts reeling, and it all began at 8am when the EC Comets overwhelmed match favourites the MP Sunbirds in a surprising 53-40 win, despite conceding an early deficit, at the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg on Friday, May 3, 2024.

In the second upset of the day, the Sonoblomo defied expectations against the Tornados, clinching a remarkable 52-48 victory in what was predicted to be a one-sided affair.

The day’s third upset unfolded as the Aloes dominated over the Flames in a game marked by a flurry of penalties and missed opportunities.

Wrapping up the surprises, debutants Tshukudu secured their second win, defeating the Diamonds and providing a sense of relief for coach Kealeboga Mabeko, who had been worried about their finishing.

The Lay of the Land

The Division 1 standings show The Jaguars leading with four wins and a draw, followed closely by The Crinums, who are trailing by seven points in goal difference. The upcoming matches are crucial, especially after The Fireballs’ loss to The Crinums, putting them in third place. 

On the other hand, the newly promoted Baobabs from Limpopo are struggling, yet to secure a single point after six defeats. They’ll have a chance to regroup before the next round of matches starting on 31 May 2024.

In Division 2, the competition is fierce with the Kingdom Stars leading the pack under the guidance of the versatile coach and player, Precious Mthembu. Following closely are the Sunbirds in second place and the Comets in third. 

However, the Limpopo Lillies are facing a tough time, yet to secure a win after seven matches. Their chance for redemption comes against the Kingdom Queens this Sunday. 

This Saturday promises excitement with two thrilling derbies. First, the KZN derby at noon, featuring the Kingdom Stars against the Kingdom Queens. Later, the Gauteng derby at 6 pm, showcasing the defending champions, the Gauteng Jaguars, against the Gauteng Golden Fireball.

Meanwhile, the newly promoted Baobabs continue to struggle, yet the break until the next Power Week which offers a chance for them to regroup under Emily Mathosa’s leadership.

Division 2 has seen some thrilling matches unfold, with the Kingdom Stars leading the charge under the guidance of the versatile Precious Mthembu. The Sunbirds follow closely in second place, trailed by the Comets in third. Meanwhile, the Limpopo Lillies have faced a tough week, yet to secure a win in seven games.
