The University of Johannesburg started an abridged Hollywoodbets Super League weekend’s fixtures in the best possible way, when Ayesha Moosa netted to give the visitors a log-leading 3-2 win over City Lads FC at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, on Saturday, 30 March, 2024.
Moosa’s 75th minute goal gave UJ their second lead of the match after Lutho Magobiyane opened scoring in the 26th minute to give City Lads a 1-nil halftime lead, but any comfort vanished when Shannon Macomo (49’) equalised and Gugu Dhlamini (64’) gave the visitors a 2-1 lead 15 minutes later.
Ashley Booysen (66’) for City Lads scored two minutes later to level scores, but it was Moosa’s decider that put the Gauteng University at the top of the log – the only side other than displaced Mamelodi Sundown to enjoy a clear log lead in 2024, though the later have a game in hand.
Sundowns was one of the teams to have their weekend fixture postponed, owing to player unavailability as a result of Desiree Ellis and Banyana Banyana preparing for the opening leg of their 4th-round CAF Olympic qualifier, against the Super Eagles in Abuja on Friday.
Unbeaten in five matches before the weekend’s action, Copperbelt Ladies’ rise up the league log was given a major boost on Sunday when match 45 saw a gleeful home side sink six goals against visitors Thunderbird Ladies at the Baroka Global Village, to sit equal on points with Sundowns and the University of Pretoria on 12 points each, all within a single point of temporary log leaders, UJ.
Thembi Munyuku (13’, 23’) scored both of the home team’s opportunistic early goals to set the stage, and then Thandi Rameri’s ensured a daunting 3-1 halftime score with the first of her hat-trick (36’, 67’ and 90+2’) to place her tied with TS Galaxy Queen’s Busisiwe Ndimeni as the league’s leading goal scorers to date at the end of the match.
It was Anati Yose (45’+1’) that put the Thunderbirds on the scoreboard, but her lone goal at the stroke of halftime could not compete against the clutch of home goals, to which Nomphelo Yakuphi’s 59-minute strike added for one of the season’s three biggest wins to date.
SABC Sport carried the day’s final match which saw Richmond Ladies punish First Touch FC Ladies 2-nil when second-half substitute Thandeka Ncambe (55’) scored just nine minutes after she took to the field, pouncing on a poor defensive clearance to drill the opener into the top left corner past a diving keeper from outside of the box, to her obvious delight.
The second goal was another defenders’ nightmare, when Molatelo Thabana was unfortunate enough to head the ball over her keeper into the net, gifting visitors Richmond Ladies an unanswered advantage to win the match 2-nil, for their third victory of the season to leave them mid-table after six outings.
Excepting the Banyana Banyana players turning out for national honour against Nigeria on Friday and in Tuesday’s return leg at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria, teams enjoy a rare weekend off this coming weekend, with fixtures resuming with the University of Pretoria at home to City Lads at 3pm the following Saturday, 13 April.
