Alexandra Candler and Jade de Figueiredo steered Hollywoodbets Dolphins Women to the inaugural CSA Women’s Professional One-Day Cup Title, when they beat DP World Lions Women by 25 runs in a thrilling final at DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on Saturday 13 March, 2024.

Heading into the final, the hosts were in hot pursuit of a bonus point win to leapfrog the Dolphins team for the title, as the exciting debut league season came to a close on Saturday.

“It has been a good season and to come away as Title Winners is special.”

Opting to field after winning the toss, the Lions bowlers struck by getting rid of Courtney Gounden (1), Asamkele Kawu (28) and Captain Nondumiso Shangase (1) within the opening 25 overs.

But it was the in-form Candler’s magnificent stand of 89, along with contributions from Zintle Mali (18), Seshni Naidu (25) and an unbeaten cameo from De Figueiredo (13) that propelled the Dolphins to the competitive total of 200/7 in their allotted 50-overs.

Lions bowling unit put on a strong fight with Maddison Landsman taking 2/19 and Relebogile Mkhize contributing two wickets for 39 runs, with each of Lehlohonolo Meso, Samantha Schutte and Kgomotso Rapoo taking one wicket apiece as they did their best to restrict their opponents.

In response, the Lions frontline batters were pinned down by the destructive bowling spell of Jade de Figueiredo, and the home side’s top order of Nkuli Thatbethe (10), Palesa Mapoo (26) and Maddison Landsman (1) fell in quick succession, to set the apple cart amiss.

Kgomotso Rapoo (60) showed resilience in her gallant effort to get her team over the line, but her innings was in vain with wickets tumbling around her. Kirstie Thopmson (14), Sunette Viljoen-Louw (17), Jenna Evans (17) and Sarah Nettleton (11) all got starts but the Lions were bundled out for 175 in the 43rd over.

Kiara Fisher was the pick of the bowling figures with 3/34, with Nondumiso Shangase taking 2/22 whilst Nonkululeko Baneti and Zintle Mali took one wicket each as the Dolphins were crowned inaugural One-Day Cup Champions.

In the post-match presentation, Dolphins Captain Nondumiso Shangase thanked their coach for pushing them hard throughout the season and believing them.

“We are so excited. It was a tough day at the office. Even though we found ourselves under pressure at times, we stuck to our game plan and got over the line. It has been a good season and to come away as Title Winners is special. We are thankful for the support from Dolphins Cricket, our sponsors and our supporters that are always backing us and believing in us.”

Meanwhile down in Oudtshoorn, Recon Tactical Free State Women beat Six Gun Garden Route Badgers Women by 4 wickets.

Winning the toss, Badger chose to have a bat first. Mochelle May (21), Julia Hoal (17), Micaela Andrews (35) and Chantelle van Schoor (23) showed resistance, but the hosts struggled to build a formidable score and found themselves bowled out for 133 in the 43rd over.

Free State bowling unit was very tactical with Elandre Janse van Rensburg taking 3/15, whilst Miane Smith, Zintle Kula and Yolandi Potgieter took two wickets apiece as they restricted their hosts to an under-par score.

In response, Free State went about their run chase with ease. Zintle Kula (25), Mignon van der Merwe (33), Verunissa Reddy (25) and an unbeaten effort from Miane Smit (15*) saw the visitors comfortably home in the 37th over.

Julandi Saayman was the pick of the Badgers bowlers with figures of 3/31, along with a contribution of 2/14 from Khayakazi Mathe as the curtain came down on a successful and exciting 2023/22024 Women’s One-Day Cup season.
